Stroke and distance; ball lost or out of bounds; provisional ball

Illustration for Stroke and distance; ball lost or out of bounds; provisional ball

Rule 18 describes the procedures for when a ball is lost or out of bounds. In such cases, the player must apply the stroke and distance penalty: count a penalty stroke and play again from the spot of the previous stroke. To save time and avoid having to walk back to the spot of the previous stroke, the player may, under specific conditions, play a provisional ball before searching for the original ball. The conditions and procedures for playing a provisional ball are described in detail in Rule 18.3.
