Playing the course as you find it

The fundamental principle 'play the course as you find it' is one of the central principles of golf and is reflected in various Rules. This includes:

• Playing the ball as it lies (Rule 9.1 'Playing Ball From Where It Comes to Rest').
• Not improving conditions affecting the stroke in principle (Rule 8.1 'Conditions Affecting the Stroke Must Not Be Improved').

When your ball has come to rest, you must not, in principle, improve the conditions affecting your stroke, although certain actions are allowed.
